Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greece and the Netherlands said Friday they are seeking to sign agreements this year to send migrants without legal residency to countries outside the European Union. The five nations agreed on concrete steps toward concluding such a deal after talks hosted by Denmark.

The agreement would establish processing centers in third countries to handle migrant returns, according to the nations' statement. The effort represents the latest European attempt to curb migration to the bloc.
