Gordon Iby, 30, a former Liverpool footballer, was convicted on Friday at Croydon Magistrates Court in London of assault and causing actual bodily harm, according to the BBC. He was sentenced to a community order lasting 12 months and ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and 27 days of rehabilitation activities. He was also fined £764, approximately $970.
The assault occurred during an altercation with Amy Mason, his former partner, in Lambeth, south London. According to testimony heard by the court, Mason called him a "drug addict," after which Iby grabbed her hair and forcibly pulled out one of her braids, leaving a bald patch on her head.
Iby was arrested at Luton Airport in January following an incident in December. He was formally charged in February and pleaded guilty in July. During Friday's hearing, Iby, who represented himself without a lawyer, expressed remorse, saying: "I have made a serious mistake, I feel genuine regret."
Iby made 58 appearances for Liverpool's first team after joining in 2012. He was loaned to Birmingham City and Derby County before permanently moving to Bournemouth in 2016, with a combined total of 119 Premier League appearances for the two clubs.
After his career in England declined, Iby moved to Ipswich United in 2023 and had several short stints at lower-division clubs before joining Bulgaria's Lokomotiv Sofia in 2025. His contract with Lokomotiv Sofia ended in June, leaving him currently unattached to any club.
